Blue ApronI live in a horrible place for fresh food.  The grocery stores are scary.  As a result, I go about an hour away once a month to purchase about 90% of our food for the month.  This means that at the end of the month fresh food is in short supply.  Also, there are only two adults in the house and I don’t cook every night.  I am an experienced cook with a long history of creating my own recipes, Asian from scratch, etc.

So, I wanted to give Blue Apron* a chance…fresh food delivered at the end of the month.  You can choose what weeks you want the service, so I decided the end of the month.  You cannot get less than 3 meals for 2 (what I did) in any week, but you don’t have to purchase any more than one week.  I got a discount for the first week so only paid for 2 of the 3 meals.

There are quite a few options to allow you to customize your meals; mostly having to do with what meats, if any, you eat.

The website interface is awesome; informative, pleasing to the eye, and easy to use.

The delivery went just as expected with regular updates available online.

The box is medium sized and not so heavy that I couldn’t manage it alone.  It was well packed inside with a “cooler” and ice bags (some ice still left when it reached me).  Blue Apron provided information about recycling everything, including the box.

There are gorgeous glossy pages with pictures that detail what is in the box, what goes with each meal, and how to cook the meal.  There are also instructions and videos online that show how to cook the meals.  Perfect for my friend that doesn’t have a clue how to cook!  This week I got Flat Iron Steak with Ramps, Fingerling Potatoes & Shaves Asparagus Salad; Turkey Kibbeh with Cucumber Salad & Mint-Yogurt Sauce, and Orecchiette Pasta with English Peas, Pecorino Cheese & Mint.

As of this writing, I have not cooked anything.  I have merely received the box, reviewed the contents, and put them in the refrigerator.  So far it seems great!

My two “negative” comments:

  1. The portions seem small.  Perhaps that will help with portion control!
  2. The pasta is dried, not fresh.

*I am not receiving anything for this review.  I purchased one week with all my own money and don’t anticipate getting anything for this or future review.
